Kerala’s Monsoon Surprise: Rains Hit Sooner Than Expected

Kerala monsoon: An Early Arrival!
The southwest monsoon is set to arrive on the Kerala coast earlier than expected, bringing with it a quicker-than-usual start to the crucial rainy season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its forecast, predicting the monsoon’s arrival within the next 4-5 days, possibly around May 23 or 24. This is earlier than both the long-term average date of June 1 and the IMD’s initial estimate of May 27.
A Shift in Forecast
The IMD’s latest update indicates increasingly favorable conditions for the monsoon to set in over Kerala. This shift in forecast comes after the IMD issued a weather advisory predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the west coast, including Karnataka, Konkan & Goa, and Kerala, between May 18 and 24. Following this spell, conditions are expected to become favorable for the monsoon’s advancement over several key regions, including parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area (southern tip of India), and the south, central, and northeast Bay of Bengal, within the next 2-3 days.
Why This Matters
The monsoon’s arrival is crucial for India’s agricultural and economic cycles. Nearly 75% of India’s annual rainfall comes from the southwest monsoon, directly influencing crop sowing, food prices, inflation, and overall economic stability. Farmers across southern India have reportedly begun preparing their fields in anticipation, though experts urge caution until further updates confirm the rainfall’s strength and consistency.
Climate Change and Early Onset
The IMD’s early monsoon indication is supported by atmospheric and oceanic observations, including increased cloud formation, strengthening cross-equatorial flow, and consistent rainfall activity over the Bay of Bengal. Interestingly, this early onset is part of a pattern seen in recent years, likely influenced by changing climate dynamics. However, an early arrival doesn’t necessarily guarantee uniform or above-normal rainfall across the country.
Preparing for the Rains
The early arrival also has implications for urban planning and flood preparedness, especially in Kerala, which has witnessed severe flooding during past monsoons. Local authorities are reportedly preparing for pre-monsoon cleaning drives and ensuring drainage systems are ready.
As the monsoon winds gather strength, pushing towards Kerala, all eyes are on the Arabian Sea, waiting for the state’s coastline to greet the rains once again.
