Flash Flood Fears: Red Alert Issued for 5 Kerala Districts

Red Alert Issued for 5 Kerala Districts as Heavy Rains Loom
Kerala is bracing for a deluge as the monsoon season intensifies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert—the highest level of warning—for five districts: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. This alert is in effect for Sunday, May 21st, and signifies a high risk of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
The IMD predicts that heavy rains will continue across Kerala for the next four days. The period from May 24th to 26th is particularly concerning, with the potential for isolated, extremely heavy rainfall. Even after that, isolated very heavy rainfall is expected through May 28th.
Localized Warnings for Strong Winds and Lightning
The IMD hasn’t just focused on the heavy rainfall warnings. They have also issued alerts for strong winds and lightning in other parts of the state. Ernakulam and Thrissur districts are on high alert for the next three hours, with the potential for isolated heavy to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching up to 50 km/h.
Additionally, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts are expected to experience isolated moderate rainfall and strong winds gusting up to 50 km/h during the same period.
