Will Gill Lead India’s Test Team? BCCI Choosing Future Over Kohli

Gill Over Kohli: India’s Test Captaincy Future
The buzz around India’s Test captaincy is heating up, and it seems Virat Kohli might be missing out on a chance to reclaim the throne.
According to a BCCI source speaking to PTI, while selectors initially considered Kohli for the upcoming England series, they’re leaning towards Shubman Gill as the long-term captain. Gill’s potential and recent leadership experience with the Gujarat Titans have solidified his position as the frontrunner.
Gill’s Rise to the Top
Although Gill’s Test career has been a bit inconsistent so far, averaging around 35, he’s gained valuable leadership experience captaining the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He was also vice-captain during India’s Champions Trophy victory. With Rohit Sharma stepping down and Jasprit Bumrah facing fitness concerns, Gill appears ready to take the reins.
The source confirmed that the decision was made to prioritize Gill’s development and grooming as a leader. At 25, Gill is considered to be on the cusp of his prime, and the England tour, beginning with a five-match series, will be a crucial test.
Pant as Vice-Captain
Adding to the captaincy news, Rishabh Pant is expected to be named vice-captain. This pairing reflects a move towards a younger leadership group, with Pant, at 27, bringing his experience and batting prowess to the team. The duo shared a memorable Gabba victory in 2021, highlighting their strong bond and understanding.
Bumrah’s Absence
Jasprit Bumrah, the current vice-captain, has been overlooked due to his inconsistent availability due to fitness concerns. The BCCI believes that focusing on Bumrah’s bowling performance is paramount at this stage.
The official announcement of the team and captaincy appointments is expected in the third week of May, just ahead of India’s tour to England.
