Gambhir’s Touching Farewell to Rohit Sharma

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, the current head coach, recently paid a heartfelt tribute to captain Rohit Sharma following his decision to retire from Test cricket. Gambhir, who shared the field with Rohit in the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his admiration.

‘Master, Leader & Gem!’

In a simple yet powerful message, Gambhir described Rohit as a ‘master, a leader & a gem!’ accompanied by a photo of the former captain. This succinct statement resonated deeply with fans and sparked widespread discussion online.

Rohit’s Test Journey: A Mixed Bag

While Rohit’s Test career was marked by moments of brilliance, it was also characterized by inconsistency. Although he possessed immense talent, translating it into consistent results proved challenging. He became the first Indian captain to drop himself from the playing XI due to poor form, a testament to his commitment to the team’s success.

Rohit’s Test statistics reflect a mixed bag: 4,301 runs in 67 Tests at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries. As captain, he led India to 12 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws.

Looking Ahead

When questioned about Rohit and Virat Kohli’s futures, Gambhir emphasized that selection decisions rested with the selectors, not the coach. However, he affirmed that as long as both players continue to perform at their best, they should remain part of the team.

“Till the time they are performing, they should be a part of the team. When you start and when you end, is your individual decision. No coach, no selector, no BCCI can tell you when you should call it quits. If you perform, then why 40, you can jolly well play till 45, who’s stopping you?”

Rohit’s ODI Future

Rohit will continue to represent India in one-day internationals. He expressed his gratitude to fans and supporters for their unwavering love and support throughout his Test journey.
