Rohit Sharma Bids Farewell to Test Cricket

In a move that surprised many, Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025. The decision came just days before the announcement of the Indian squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England.

Champion’s Crown and a Thoughtful Exit

While the news came as a shock to some, reports suggest that Rohit had already made up his mind to retire back in March after leading India to victory in the Champions Trophy.

“The retirement from Test cricket was on Rohit’s mind since India won the Champions Trophy. A new WTC (World Test Championship) cycle was starting, and hence he thought this was the best time,” a source close to Rohit revealed to PTI.

The decision was reportedly communicated to relevant individuals within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) despite ongoing media speculation about Rohit’s future in the longer format of the game.

A Clarity of Choice

The report also sheds light on the selection process for the England tour. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee remained tight-lipped about Rohit’s inclusion, even with just a week to go before the squad announcement. While the selectors did meet informally in Mumbai to discuss the series strategy, head coach Gautam Gambhir’s involvement couldn’t be confirmed.

Amidst the uncertainty, Rohit made it clear that he wanted to be in control of his own cricketing destiny.

Focus on Limited-Overs Cricket

In a statement released by the BCCI, it was confirmed that Rohit will continue to captain India in the ODI format. The 38-year-old is now setting his sights on leading India to victory in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“Rohit is determined to play the 2027 ODI World Cup and he will do everything in his power to remain fit and play the mega-event,” the source added.

India’s next ODI series is scheduled for August against Bangladesh. The team also has two more ODI series lined up in 2025 – against Australia in October and South Africa in December.
