Did KKR Miss Gambhir’s ‘Thrill Factor’ in IPL 2025?

KKR’s Winning Streak Ends: A Different Story in IPL 2025
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) experienced a dramatic shift in fortune in IPL 2025. After a dominant 2024 season, where they clinched the title under the guidance of mentor Gautam Gambhir, the defending champions failed to reach the playoffs in 2025. With captain Shreyas Iyer also absent from the squad, the team seemed to lack the winning momentum that had characterized their previous campaign.
The Gambhir Factor: More Than Just a Captain
Former KKR opener Manvinder Bisla, who was part of their 2012 title-winning team under Gambhir’s captaincy, believes Gambhir’s impact extends far beyond his role as a captain. He highlights the winning mentality Gambhir brings to the team, a crucial element that often sets apart successful teams from struggling ones.
“Gautam (Gambhir) brings a huge impact — and not just with KKR. Even in the two years before this, he was with another team (likely referring to LSG), and they also made it to the playoffs. And now that he’s left, that team is struggling. The winning mentality Gautam brings is extremely important — especially in the IPL, where the difference between the team finishing first and the one finishing tenth isn’t massive.”
Bisla emphasizes the importance of backing uncapped players, a strategy Gambhir employed effectively. He explains that consistent playing opportunities allow these players to develop confidence and showcase their potential.
Missing the Winning Momentum
Bisla points out that KKR lacked a consistent winning run in IPL 2025, which hindered their ability to build momentum and confidence. He argues that the team’s intent in the middle overs seemed to be lacking throughout the season.
Looking Ahead
With a new captain in Ajinkya Rahane, KKR will be looking to regroup and find their winning form in future seasons. The lessons learned from their 2025 campaign will undoubtedly shape their strategy and approach moving forward.
