Red Alert for Goa and Coastal Maharashtra: IMD Warns of ‘Very Heavy Rainfall’

Red Alert Issued for Goa and Coastal Maharashtra
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for North and South Goa districts and coastal Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds. Goa is already experiencing an early monsoon, with Ponda recording a staggering 162mm of rainfall.
Early Monsoon Arrives with a Bang
The southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala eight days ahead of schedule, triggering the red alert warning. This early onset has also affected parts of northern India, including Delhi NCR and Amritsar, causing clogged roads, flight diversions, and infrastructural losses.
Goa Implements Safety Measures
In preparation for the heavy rains, local authorities in Goa have taken several steps. Vishwajit Rane, Goa Forest Minister, announced the closure of all waterfalls for swimming activities due to the risk posed by high water levels.
Maharashtra on High Alert
Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra have been warned of “very, very extremely heavy rainfall” in certain coastal regions, including Satara and Kolhapur. Raigad is under an orange alert, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Monsoon’s Impact on Kerala
Kerala is experiencing the full force of the early monsoon, with heavy rain and strong winds causing damage to infrastructure and disrupting daily life. Power cuts, waterlogged areas, and travel disruptions have been reported as residents deal with the sudden onslaught of showers. Adventure tourism in both Kerala and Goa has come to a halt as authorities prioritize the safety of residents.
Nationwide Impact
While the north of India is still experiencing peak summer temperatures, the torrential rains have brought a welcome respite from the heat in Delhi NCR. The eight-day early onset of the monsoon is the third occurrence since 1975, with the last instance happening in 2009.
