National Picture
This increase in Maharashtra comes as India remains vigilant about rising COVID-19 cases globally. According to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday, May 26, 2025, the country had 1,010 active cases, with Kerala reporting the highest number at 430.
Surge in Cases Linked to New Variants
Experts believe that the JN.1 variant and its relatives, which belong to the Omicron family, are driving the recent surge in cases, particularly in regions like Singapore and Hong Kong.
Health Ministry Monitoring the Situation
The Indian Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and has reviewed the domestic risk assessment. They emphasize their proactive approach to ensuring public health preparedness as the situation evolves.
Most Cases Remain Mild
The good news is that the majority of cases currently reported in India are mild and do not require hospitalization. Sources within the Ministry of Health have confirmed that almost all cases are mild in nature.
