In a move to boost tourism safety and reassure travelers, the Maharashtra government has announced the creation of the Maharashtra Tourism Security Force (MTSF), also known as ‘Tourism Mitra’. This special unit, introduced under the state’s new Tourism Policy 2024, will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of tourists visiting Maharashtra.

A Force Focused on Safety and Information

The government’s official circular, released in April 2025, highlights the MTSF’s dual role: not only safeguarding tourists but also providing them with valuable information about the state’s rich cultural heritage and popular tourist destinations.

This initiative is part of a larger plan to revitalize Maharashtra’s tourism sector. The state aims to attract significant private investment, estimated at Rs 1 lakh crore, and generate around 18 lakh direct and indirect jobs. This ambitious plan leverages Maharashtra’s diverse natural and cultural assets to attract more visitors.

Pilot Program in Satara District

The MTSF will first be tested in Satara district during the upcoming Mahabaleshwar Mahotsav, a major cultural event scheduled for May 1st to 4th, 2025. Twenty-five trained personnel will be deployed under the guidance of the Satara District Police Superintendent, working in partnership with the Maharashtra State Security Corporation.

This pilot program will run from April 25th to August 31st, 2025. During this time, the MTSF will be provided with necessary vehicles and logistical support. Senior officers will oversee operations, and funding will be shared between the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, the Maharashtra State Security Corporation, and the Satara Police Superintendent. The Tourism Development Corporation will be reimbursed for any expenses incurred.

Minister’s Vision for Tourism Security

Maharashtra Tourism Minister Shamburaj Desai emphasized the government’s commitment to tourism safety, stating, “The government has decided to form Maharashtra Tourism Security Force. The decision has been taken in view of increasing opportunities in the tourism sector, diversity with regards to geography and culture in the state and to give a secured tourist experience.”

Desai further elaborated, “They will also be posted for the security of the tourists. This will increase employment opportunities in the state. They will take training to give information as well as protection to the tourists.”

Statewide Rollout on the Horizon

The success of the pilot program in Satara district will pave the way for a statewide rollout of the MTSF. Further government orders are expected to formalize this expansion, ensuring that tourists throughout Maharashtra enjoy a safe and secure travel experience.
