Golden Jackal Rescued From Deep Well in Maharashtra

A six-month-old female golden jackal had a narrow escape after falling into a 40-foot-deep open well in Sukalvedhe village, Maharashtra. Thankfully, local residents spotted the distressed animal and quickly alerted the Maharashtra Forest Department.

Swift Rescue Operation

The Forest Department immediately contacted Wildlife SOS, a renowned NGO dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. A two-member rescue team from the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre (MLRC) rushed to the scene. With precision and patience, they lowered a cage into the well, coaxing the frightened jackal into it.

The young animal was carefully lifted to safety and transported to the MLRC, a joint initiative of Wildlife SOS and the Maharashtra Forest Department.

Good Health, Safe Return

Veterinarians at the MLRC examined the jackal and found her to be in good health, with no visible injuries. After a 24-hour observation period to ensure she was fully recovered and stress-free, the jackal was released back into her natural habitat in the same region.

Dr. Avinash Visalkar, Veterinary Officer at Wildlife SOS, expressed relief at the successful rescue. "Open wells pose a significant threat to wildlife in rural Maharashtra," he stated. "We are fortunate that this young jackal was unharmed and responded well to the rescue efforts. It’s always rewarding to reunite an animal with its natural environment."

Smita Rajhans, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) at the Junnar Forest Division, emphasized the importance of collaboration. "Thanks to the swift coordination and support from Wildlife SOS, we were able to rescue and safely release the jackal," she said. "Such partnerships are vital for effective wildlife conservation."
