Inside the Supreme Court Collegium: Who’s Who Under CJI Gavai

A Look at the Supreme Court Collegium Under CJI Gavai
The Supreme Court Collegium, the body responsible for appointing judges to India’s highest court and deciding on the transfer of High Court judges, is set to see a few changes as Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud steps down and Justice BR Gavai takes the helm.
Who Makes Up the Collegium?
The Collegium consists of the five most senior judges of the Supreme Court. It plays a crucial role in shaping India’s judiciary by selecting the judges who will interpret the law and oversee justice.
The Current Members
As CJI Gavai’s tenure begins, the Collegium will be comprised of Justices Surya Kant, Abhay S Oka, Vikram Nath, and JK Maheshwari.
Future Changes
Justice BV Nagarathna, who will make history as the first woman CJI, will join the Collegium in May 2025 after Justice Oka retires. Justice MM Sundresh will then take Justice Gavai’s place in the Collegium after CJI Gavai’s retirement on November 23, 2025.
These changes reflect the dynamic nature of the Supreme Court and the ongoing efforts to ensure diversity and representation within the judiciary.
