Delhi Gears Up Amidst Rising COVID Cases

The Delhi government is taking precautions and urging hospitals to prepare for a potential surge in COVID-19 cases. This comes as infections are on the rise in other countries like China, Thailand, and Singapore.

Hospital Preparedness Measures

Health Minister Pankaj Singh announced that Delhi reported 23 new COVID cases on Friday. He emphasized that authorities are verifying the details of these cases to determine if the patients are residents of Delhi or have a travel history.

In response to the rising cases, the Delhi government has issued an advisory to all hospitals, instructing them to ensure the availability of essential resources:

  • Beds
  • Oxygen
  • Antibiotics and other necessary medications
  • Vaccines

The advisory also stresses the importance of maintaining fully functional medical equipment such as ventilators, Bi-PAP machines, oxygen concentrators, and PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) plants.

Hospitals have been directed to submit daily reports on all relevant health parameters to the Delhi state health data management portal.

National COVID Situation

While India’s overall COVID-19 situation remains under control, according to the Union Health Ministry, a total of 257 cases were reported across the country on Wednesday. Several states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Haryana, Karnataka, and West Bengal, have reported new infections.

Kerala reported 273 COVID-19 cases in May, with Kottayam recording the highest number. Haryana reported four new mild cases and assured residents that the situation is being closely monitored.

Expert Review Meeting

On May 19, experts from various health organizations and government agencies, including the National Centre for Disease Control, Emergency Medical Relief division, Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research, and central government hospitals, held a review meeting. The meeting concluded that the current COVID-19 situation in India remains under control.

As of May 19, 2025, India had 257 active COVID-19 cases, a low figure considering the country’s vast population. Most of these cases are mild and do not require hospitalization.
