Coastal Chaos as Container Ship Capsizes

A major maritime incident has unfolded off the coast of Kochi, Kerala, as the Liberian-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 capsized on Saturday, raising fears of a significant oil spill and environmental damage.

Rescue Operation and Hazardous Cargo

Thankfully, all 24 crew members on board, hailing from Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, and Georgia, were successfully rescued. The 184-meter-long ship, carrying 640 containers, was reportedly carrying 13 containers with hazardous cargo and 12 containers containing calcium carbide. Additionally, it was carrying 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Navy launched a joint rescue operation after the vessel reported a 26-degree list on Friday afternoon. The rapid capsizing, attributed to flooding in one of its cargo holds, prompted an urgent response.

Oil Spill Threat and Coastal Response

Experts warn that spilled oil from the sunken vessel could reach the coastlines of Alappuzha, Ambalapuzha, Arattupuzha, and Karunagappally within 36-48 hours. These coastal regions are now on high alert for potential contamination.

The ICG has activated comprehensive pollution response measures and is working closely with state authorities. Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a public advisory against touching any floating containers or oil patches that may wash ashore. They urge immediate reporting of any such sightings to the police.

Salvage Efforts and Ongoing Monitoring

A vessel from the ship’s parent company has arrived at the site to assist in the response efforts. Coast Guard and Navy ships continue to monitor the area for pollution and salvage risks.
