Fear in Gadchiroli as Notorious Tusker CME3 Returns

Rogue Tusker CME3 Back in Gadchiroli, Sparking Fears
A notorious tusker known as CME3, infamous for its violent encounters with humans, has been spotted roaming the streets of Gadchiroli city in Maharashtra. This sighting has reignited concerns about the potential for human-elephant conflict in the region.
CME3, estimated to be around 35 years old, crossed over from Chhattisgarh earlier this month with another elephant. The tusker’s return has alarmed local authorities and wildlife experts, who are calling for immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
Concerns Over Lack of Action
Sagnik Sengupta, co-founder of the NGO Stripes and Green Earth (SAGE) Foundation, criticized the Maharashtra Forest Department for failing to take adequate measures to address the situation. He pointed out that despite knowing CME3’s history of violence, authorities have not implemented a comprehensive human-elephant conflict mitigation strategy.
Sengupta emphasized the need for a “holistic Elephant Conservation Plan” that includes monitoring, bio-fencing, and an early warning system. He expressed disappointment that the department continues to rely on restricting elephant movement rather than addressing the root causes of the conflict.
A Tragic History
CME3’s reputation for aggression is well-documented. In November 2023, the tusker was involved in the tragic death of a farmer in Gariaband district. This incident highlights the very real danger that rogue elephants pose to local communities.
Local authorities are under increasing pressure to ensure the safety of both residents and wildlife. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen what steps will be taken to prevent further conflict and protect both humans and elephants in the Gadchiroli region.
