Maharashtra Reports Two COVID-19 Deaths, Health Officials Reassure Public

Mumbai, May 21 – Maharashtra has reported two COVID-19 related deaths since January, according to the state health department. Both deaths occurred in Mumbai and involved patients with underlying health conditions, highlighting the continued vulnerability of individuals with comorbidities to the virus.
According to the department, one deceased patient suffered from nephrotic syndrome and hypocalcemia, while the other was battling cancer. The health department emphasized that while these deaths are concerning, they are not indicative of a widespread resurgence of the virus.
Testing and Cases
Since January, a total of 6,066 swab samples have been examined for COVID-19 in Maharashtra, with 106 positive cases identified. Of these, 101 cases were found in Mumbai, while the remaining 5 cases were spread across Pune, Thane, and Kolhapur. Currently, 52 patients are receiving treatment for mild symptoms, while 16 are hospitalized.
National and Global Trends
The health department acknowledged that a recent spike in COVID-19 cases is being observed not only in Maharashtra but also in other states within India and globally. They stressed that the virus is endemic and continues to circulate, but emphasized the effectiveness of available treatments and the importance of vigilant monitoring.
Public Urged to Remain Calm
“Covid is a disease caused by a virus. Currently, the ILI (Influenza-like Illness) and SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infection) survey is going on in Maharashtra for Covid. In that survey, such patients are tested for Covid. These Covid patients are being treated regularly after testing positive, Covid cases are currently rare in the state. Mild symptoms are being found in Covid patients. Covid testing and treatment facilities are available through the health department. Therefore, the public is urged not to panic,” said the release.
Municipal Response
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) echoed these sentiments, stating that COVID-19 is now considered an endemic disease. The BMC emphasized that while cases have been increasing globally, the number of patients in Mumbai has remained low.
They assure the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and that adequate treatment and guidance facilities are available in civic hospitals, including Seven Hills Hospital and Kasturba Hospital.
Precautionary Measures
The BMC also reminded citizens about the importance of taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, particularly those who are immunocompromised or have underlying health conditions. They advise consulting a doctor if symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, body aches, or headache are experienced. The BMC also recommends wearing a mask in public if symptoms are present, maintaining social distancing, frequent handwashing, and a healthy lifestyle.
