Trump Suggests 80% China Tariff Cut

President Donald Trump has hinted at a potential reduction in tariffs on Chinese goods, proposing a rate of 80% just ahead of key trade talks in Switzerland. While this represents a considerable drop from the current 145% tariff, it still remains a substantial hurdle for businesses and investors hoping for a more significant easing of trade tensions.

Trump’s Announcement

Trump made the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B.”. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is among the U.S. officials set to meet with Chinese counterparts this weekend in Switzerland.

Potential Impact on Trade

While the proposed 80% tariff would be a significant reduction, it’s still higher than many anticipated and could potentially hinder trade between the two economic giants. It also stands in stark contrast to the 10% baseline tariff in the U.S.-U.K. trade agreement announced earlier this week.

Negotiation Strategy Uncertain

It remains unclear whether this 80% rate is Trump’s long-term vision for China tariffs, or if it serves as a strategic starting point for negotiations. Trump has indicated that he’s pursuing multiple trade deals, suggesting a broader approach to reshaping the global trading landscape.

China as a Key Player

China has emerged as a central focus in Trump’s efforts to overhaul global trade. While other major countries saw a partial suspension of previously imposed tariffs, tensions between the U.S. and China escalated, eventually leading to tariffs exceeding 100% on goods traded between them.

China remains one of the U.S.’ largest trading partners. In 2024 alone, the U.S. exported $143.5 billion in goods to China while importing $438.9 billion, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Trump has repeatedly called for China to open its market further to American goods and services, emphasizing the need for a more balanced trade relationship.
