Trump Administration Sacks Nearly 600 Voice of America Staff

Hundreds Laid Off at Voice of America
The Trump administration took a drastic step on Thursday, firing nearly 600 employees at Voice of America (VOA), a federally funded news organization known for its independent reporting to countries with limited press freedoms. This move, which targeted both journalists and administrative staff, represents over a third of VOA’s workforce.
A Blow to VOA Despite Court Ruling
These layoffs come despite a court ruling last month that ordered the federal government to continue providing strong news programming to VOA. President Trump has repeatedly criticized VOA, calling it “the voice of radical America”.
Further Hostility Towards VOA
Adding to the tension, the federal building in Washington that houses VOA was put up for sale on the same day as the firings. This action further demonstrates the Trump administration’s apparent hostility towards the broadcaster.
Director Calls Firings ‘Inexplicable’
Michael Abramowitz, the director of VOA, expressed his shock and disbelief in an email to his staff, calling the firings “inexplicable”.
