Biden: Trump’s Behavior ‘Not Befitting a Republican President’

In his first interview since leaving office, former President Joe Biden sat down with BBC’s Nick Robinson to discuss his thoughts on his successor, Donald Trump, and the state of the world today. Biden expressed deep concern over Trump’s approach to foreign policy, particularly his treatment of America’s allies and his dealings with Russia.

Biden, who views the NATO alliance as crucial to global security, criticized Trump’s actions as potentially damaging to the organization and to the world order. He argued that Trump’s rhetoric and policies are sowing doubt about America’s commitment to its allies and emboldening Russia.

Concerns Over Trump’s Foreign Policy

Biden pointed to Trump’s repeated attempts to pressure Ukraine into giving up territory to Russia as a troubling example of appeasement. He warned that this approach could set a dangerous precedent and encourage further aggression by Russia.

“It is modern-day appeasement,” Biden said. “Putin sees Ukraine as part of Mother Russia. He believes he has historical rights to Ukraine… He can’t stand the fact that the Soviet Union has collapsed. And anybody who thinks he’s going to stop is just foolish.”

The former president also condemned Trump’s attacks on NATO and his suggestion that the United States might withdraw from the alliance. Biden emphasized the importance of NATO as a bulwark against Russian aggression and stressed that the United States has a sacred obligation to defend its allies.

Trump’s ‘Un-Republican’ Behavior

Beyond foreign policy, Biden criticized Trump’s behavior as inconsistent with the values of the Republican Party. He argued that Trump’s actions and rhetoric are divisive and damaging to American democracy.

“He’s not behaving like a Republican president,” Biden stated.

Despite his criticisms, Biden expressed cautious optimism that the Republican Party is beginning to recognize the dangers of Trump’s policies and may move away from his brand of populism.

Biden’s Legacy and the Future of Democracy

In the interview, Biden reflected on his own presidency and his efforts to uphold American values and principles on the world stage. He acknowledged the challenges facing democracy today but remained hopeful that future generations will continue to fight for its preservation.

“Every generation has to fight to maintain democracy, every one,” Biden said. “Every one’s going to be challenged. We’ve done it well for the last 80 years. And I’m worried there’s the loss of understanding of the consequences of that.”
