Drop Duchy: A Challenging and Addictive Blend of Tetris, Deckbuilding, and Strategy

Drop Duchy: A Unique Fusion of Genres
When my colleague Kyle Orland suggested Tetrisweeper for a list of favorite 2024 games, I was skeptical. As a casual Tetris player, the idea of combining it with deckbuilding and other mechanics seemed overwhelming. But Drop Duchy (available on Steam and Epic for Windows/Linux via Proton) has surprised me.
It’s not just another Tetris clone. Drop Duchy throws in a bunch of interesting twists:
- Resource Management: You need to align terrain types to gather resources like wheat, wood, and stone.
- Strategic Placement: You place both your troops and your enemy’s, carefully considering the battlefield layout.
- Deckbuilding: Choose which cards to upgrade, sell, or bring into battle, influencing your strategy.
- Tech Tree Progression: Unlock new abilities and upgrades by achieving milestones.
- Tactical Decision-Making: Sequence your battles strategically for maximum effectiveness.
Drop Duchy feels like a fast-paced, tabletop board game. It’s a quirky mix of genres, and while the different elements don’t always seamlessly blend together, the game’s addictive nature keeps me coming back. Even when I’m soundly beaten, I find myself eager to try again and see if I can make better decisions.
How Does It Work?
The game starts with a pool of terrain tiles (plains and forests initially) and your starting buildings mixed in with your enemy’s. Your objective is to strategically place these tiles in Tetris-like formations. Filling a horizontal line yields resources but doesn’t clear it.
A Challenging and Rewarding Experience
Drop Duchy is a challenging game that rewards careful planning and strategic thinking. It’s a unique blend of genres that offers a fresh and engaging gameplay experience.
