Brooklyn Bridge Collision: Mysteries Remain After Deadly Crash

A day after a Mexican Navy ship slammed into the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, authorities are still piecing together the details of the deadly incident.
The 300-foot-long sailing vessel, the Cuauhtémoc, remains docked at Pier 36 in Manhattan after the collision, which tragically claimed the lives of two crew members.
While investigations are underway, a clear picture of what led to the crash remains elusive.
Senator Chuck Schumer, after being briefed on the accident, expressed the sentiment of many: “To put it mildly, after being fully briefed on last night’s Brooklyn Bridge accident, one thing is very clear: There are many more questions than answers as to how the accident occurred and whether it could have been prevented,”
What went wrong?
The National Transportation Safety Board and Mexican officials are working together to investigate the cause of the accident. Early reports suggest mechanical issues caused the Cuauhtémoc to veer off course, but the exact nature of these issues is still unknown.
The role of a tugboat
A tugboat, seen in videos and photographs of the incident, is also under scrutiny. Authorities are trying to determine if the tugboat played a role in the accident, and if so, to what extent.
