Historic Moment: First American Pope Elected

VATICAN CITY — The Roman Catholic Church has a new leader, and he’s from America! US Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected pope, marking a historic first for the country. He has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV.

The 69-year-old new pope appeared at the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, greeted the crowd with a wave, and proclaimed, ‘Peace be with all of you!’

Speaking in Italian, Spanish, and Latin, Pope Leo XIV extended his message of peace, urging it to ‘enter your hearts, reach your families and all people, wherever they are.’ He expressed gratitude to the cardinals for electing him and warmly thanked his former diocese in Peru, stating, ‘where a loyal people has shared its faith and has given a lot.'”

A Celebration in Rome

Earlier, white smoke billowed from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signaling the end of the papal conclave and the election of a new pope. The news was met with cheers from the thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, who watched the event unfold on large screens. The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica tolled throughout the city, amplifying the joy of the moment.

Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, a 73-year-old Frenchman born in Morocco, was expected to announce the new pope’s name from the balcony, unless he himself was elected.

The Papal Election Process

Before the announcement, a series of traditional rituals took place. Once the cardinals reached a two-thirds majority vote, the most senior cardinal asked the newly elected pope, ‘Do you accept your canonical election as supreme pontiff?’ Upon his acceptance, he is then asked, ‘What name do you wish to be called?’

Afterward, the cardinal electors pay homage and pledge obedience to the new head of the church, giving thanks to God. The new pope is then taken to a sacristy and fitted with papal attire. Finally, the momentous announcement is made in Latin: ‘Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus Papam!’ (‘I bring you tidings of great joy: We have a pope!’) followed by an apostolic blessing from the new pope to the faithful gathered below.

A New Chapter for the Catholic Church

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church. With a new leader at the helm, the world eagerly awaits to see what direction the church will take under his guidance.
