Longtime Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly Dies at 75

The political world is mourning the loss of Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly of Virginia, who passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday surrounded by family. He was 75 years old.

Connolly’s death comes weeks after he announced he wouldn’t seek reelection in 2026 and would step down as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee due to his cancer returning.

A Life Dedicated to Service

In a statement released by his family, they shared the heartbreaking news and celebrated his life: ‘It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family.’

Connolly was first elected to represent Virginia’s 11th Congressional District in 2009, serving the region outside of Washington, D.C., for over a decade.

Last November, he announced his battle with esophageal cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy. While he initially saw some success with treatment, the cancer returned, prompting him to reflect on his time in public service. In an open letter to his constituents last month, he wrote, ‘My sun is setting on my time in public service.’

His family echoed this sentiment, saying, ‘We were fortunate to share Gerry with Northern Virginia for nearly 40 years because that was his joy, his purpose, and his passion.’ They added, ‘His absence will leave a hole in our hearts, but we are proud that his life’s work will endure for future generations.’

A Legacy of Leadership

Before his time in Congress, Connolly served for 14 years on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, leading for five years as its chairman. Fairfax County is the largest jurisdiction in the Washington, D.C., region, home to over 1 million residents.

In Congress, Connolly served on the influential Oversight panel and the Foreign Affairs Committee. His colleagues elected him to serve as the ranking member of the Oversight Committee following the 2022 elections. His decision to step down from this leadership role last month triggered an internal race among Democrats to succeed him.

Remembering a Dedicated Public Servant

Gerry Connolly’s passing is a significant loss for his family, friends, constituents, and the entire nation. His dedication to public service and his commitment to representing the people of Virginia will be deeply missed.
