Tragedy at Sea: Five Arrested After Migrant Boat Capsizes, Killing Three

Tragedy struck off the coast of San Diego on Monday as a migrant boat carrying dozens capsized, resulting in the deaths of at least three people, including a 14-year-old boy from India. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California announced that five Mexican nationals have been charged in connection with the incident.
The victims were part of a family traveling aboard the panga, a type of open vessel often used for smuggling people or drugs. The 14-year-old boy was onboard with his parents and sister. His father is currently in a coma, and his mother is hospitalized, while his 10-year-old sister remains missing and is presumed dead.
Jesus Ivan Rodriguez-Leyva, 36, and Julio Cesar Zuniga-Luna, 30, were arrested at Torrey Pines State Beach just north of San Diego. Both men face serious charges, including bringing in aliens resulting in death, which carries a maximum penalty of death or life in prison and a $250,000 fine. They are also charged with bringing in aliens for financial gain.
