Kim Jong-un’s Navy Dreams Sink: North Korea Arrests Officials After Failed Ship Launch

North Korea has made some high-profile arrests following a disastrous naval ceremony last week. Three shipyard officials have been taken into custody as the country investigates the failed launch of a brand-new destroyer that left its leader, Kim Jong-un, publicly embarrassed.
A Ceremony Gone Wrong
According to state media, the incident happened on Wednesday during an elaborate ceremony overseen by Kim Jong-un himself. The newly built, 5,000-ton destroyer was supposed to be launched into the water at the Chongjin shipyard on the country’s northeastern coast. Satellite images showed a large crowd gathered for the event, which aimed to showcase Kim Jong-un’s efforts to modernize North Korea’s navy. But things quickly went awry.
As engineers attempted to slide the ship sideways into the water, it lost its balance and ended up partially submerged on its side. A subsequent satellite image captured the scene: the destroyer’s stern in the water, its bow still stuck on the ramp, and the entire vessel covered in blue tarpaulins, likely an attempt to hide it from prying eyes.
Who’s Taking the Fall?
The official Korean Central News Agency reported that the chief engineer at the shipyard, the head of its hull-construction workshop, and a deputy manager for administrative affairs have all been arrested. It remains unclear what specific charges they face, but the arrests signal a serious attempt by the North Korean government to address the highly publicized setback.
A Blow to North Korea’s Image
The failed launch is a significant embarrassment for Kim Jong-un, who has prioritized the development of a strong military and has made numerous public pronouncements about his ambitions for the North Korean navy. The incident highlights the technical challenges North Korea faces in its military modernization efforts and could potentially undermine its image on the international stage.
