Convicted Killer ‘Devil in the Ozarks’ Escapes Prison

Ex-Police Chief Escapes Prison Disguised as Guard
Authorities are on the hunt for Grant Hardin, a former police chief from Arkansas who was serving lengthy sentences for murder and rape. Hardin escaped from the North Central Unit prison (also known as Calico Rock) on Sunday by posing as a guard and walking out through a gate.
Hardin, known as the “Devil in the Ozarks,” was convicted of murdering James Appleton, a water department worker, in 2017. He was also serving a 50-year sentence for the 1997 rape of an elementary school teacher.
How He Escaped
According to a spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Hardin wore clothes that didn’t resemble a standard inmate or guard uniform. Officials are still trying to determine where he obtained the disguise and how he managed to pull it off.
The escape happened around 2:55 p.m. on Sunday, and prison officials didn’t announce it until about 5 p.m. Video surveillance captured the escape.
Search Underway
A massive search effort is underway in the rugged Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas. Authorities are using canines, drones, and helicopters to scour the area. The terrain, known for its rocky landscape, is posing a challenge for the search teams.
The recent heavy rainfall in the area has further complicated the search.
Community on Edge
Cheryl Tillman, Appleton’s sister, said she and other family members are terrified by Hardin’s escape as they were witnesses in his trial. She described him as an “evil man” and said his escape has reopened old wounds.
Local law enforcement has urged residents to remain vigilant, lock their homes and vehicles, and report any suspicious activity.
Hardin’s History and Potential for Capture
Retired U.S. Marshals inspector Craig Caine, who has handled numerous escaped prisoner cases, believes Hardin’s chances of escape are limited. He points out that the rural setting means Hardin will eventually run out of supplies and that the tight-knit community might lead to his identification.
Local Reaction
Darla Nix, a cafe owner in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, said she knew Hardin when he was part of the community. She described him as a “very, very smart man” who knows the area well, making the search more challenging.
