Vivo X200 Ultra: A Phone Camera That Rivals Mirrorless

Vivo’s latest flagship smartphone, the X200 Ultra, is making waves in the tech world. This isn’t your average phone camera; it’s designed to capture seriously impressive photos and videos, even challenging dedicated mirrorless cameras.

A Camera First, a Phone Second

The X200 Ultra boasts the largest camera unit I’ve ever seen on a smartphone, and it shows. Vivo has taken a unique approach to its multi-camera setup, opting for comparable specs across all lenses instead of a main sensor with superior specs and auxiliary lenses. All three cameras – the ultra-wide, primary, and telephoto – use powerful Sony and Samsung sensors, allowing you to use any one without a significant drop in performance, even in low light conditions.

Another feature that sets the X200 Ultra apart is its 35mm-equivalent main camera lens. This focal length mimics what our eyes see naturally, producing images with less distortion and requiring more thought about framing. It gives the phone a more “camera-like” feel right out of the box.

Accessories Elevate the Experience

Vivo offers an optional Photography Kit that takes the X200 Ultra to the next level. This kit, similar to those seen on some Xiaomi phones, includes a case with filter compatibility, attachment points for straps, and a removable DSLR-style grip. The grip adds features like a zoom lever, shutter button, control dial, and dedicated video button.

The real showstopper, though, is the optional 2.35x Zeiss Teleconverter. This external lens adapter attaches to the Photography Kit and dramatically increases the telephoto lens’ reach, equivalent to a 200mm lens with digital cropping options reaching up to 800mm. The results are impressive, rivaling those of dedicated mirrorless cameras, especially for wildlife and concert photography.

Beyond the Camera: A Powerful Phone

The X200 Ultra isn’t just a camera powerhouse; it’s also a top-notch smartphone. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, making it a gaming beast, and it features a stunning display, decent speakers, and a massive 6000mAh battery for extended use.

Software Considerations

While Origin OS is feature-rich and stylish, it’s not designed for Western audiences. There’s no Play Store or Google Services out of the box, although setting them up is relatively easy. However, you might encounter issues with Google Wallet and banking applications, and compatibility with Android Auto and Wear OS can be inconsistent.

A Worthy Contender for Travelers and Everyday Shooters

The Vivo X200 Ultra won’t replace my full-frame mirrorless camera anytime soon, but it’s a fantastic option for travelers or anyone who wants a high-quality camera that’s always with them. Its versatility, ease of use, and impressive image quality make it a serious contender in the smartphone photography world.
