Samsung Unveils Its Thinnest Galaxy S25 Edge, Taking on Apple

Samsung is throwing down the gauntlet in the premium smartphone market with the launch of its slimmest flagship yet, the Galaxy S25 Edge. Announced on Tuesday, the S25 Edge boasts enhanced AI features and aims to capitalize on the growing demand for portable devices, particularly among younger consumers.
A Slim and Sleek Design
Samsung listened to user feedback and made structural changes to shave down the thickness of internal components, including the printed circuit board and thermal systems. The result? A phone that’s noticeably thinner and lighter without compromising performance. The S25 Edge measures just 5.8 millimeters thick, making it a contender for the title of slimmest smartphone on the market.
Strategic Timing to Beat Apple
Analysts believe Samsung’s timing is no coincidence. Apple is widely expected to unveil a thinner iPhone later this year, so Samsung is looking to get ahead of the curve. Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, said, ‘By releasing the product a few months ahead, Samsung could inflict some impact on Apple and attract consumers looking for thinner smartphones. It appears to be a calculated decision to capture that segment of demand.’
AI Upgrades and Availability
The S25 Edge is packed with Samsung’s latest AI features, including multimodal AI, which lets users interact with the phone in real time through voice and vision. The camera can be used to ask questions, making for a more intuitive and hands-free experience.
The phone will hit shelves in South Korea on May 23 and the United States on May 30, with a global rollout planned for around 30 countries, including China and Europe.
Priced starting at $1,099, the S25 Edge features a 6.7-inch screen and a slim design that’s larger than the basic S25 model but only slightly heavier.
Addressing Heat Concerns
Samsung acknowledged concerns about potential overheating issues with a thinner device but assured consumers that they have addressed these concerns. Executive Vice President Moon Sung-hoon stated, ‘We managed to engineer a thinner vapor chamber to fit the slim design, and we put everything into making that happen. We’re confident the S25 Edge can be used without concerns about overheating.’
Samsung’s Market Dominance
Samsung’s move comes at a time when the company is leading the global smartphone market. Data from Counterpoint Research showed that Samsung captured 20% of the global market share in the first quarter of 2025, narrowly surpassing Apple’s 19% share.
