Samsung has put an end to rumors swirling online about the Galaxy S25 Edge being inspired by an unannounced Apple iPhone 17 Air. The tech giant has made it clear that the idea for the slim and sleek Galaxy S25 Edge predates any speculation about an iPhone 17 Air.

The Rumor Mill

Since the Galaxy S25 Edge’s launch, gossip has been rampant that it was a copycat design, mirroring a nonexistent iPhone 17 Air. However, Samsung product specialist Kadesh Beckford told Forbes that the concept for the Edge had been in the works since at least August 2023, the week of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 launch.

A Design Journey

Beckford explained that the team had to redesign every component to achieve the phone’s slim profile. This included shrinking a massive 200-megapixel camera sensor and lens to fit within the compact chassis. He emphasized that while slim phones aren’t new, packing flagship features into such a small package is a significant engineering feat.

Meeting Consumer Demands

According to Beckford, the Galaxy S25 Edge was born from customer requests for a lighter and more manageable phone that still boasted the powerful features found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The Edge shares many similarities with its larger sibling, including the Titanium alloy frame, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the full suite of Galaxy AI conveniences, and the impressive 200-megapixel camera. It also benefits from the same seven generations of software updates.

The Galaxy S25 Edge measures a remarkably slim 5.8mm and weighs 163 grams, compared to the hefty 8.2mm and 218 grams of the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Reality vs. Rumor

While the Galaxy S25 Edge is now a tangible reality, the iPhone 17 Air remains purely speculative. Samsung deserves credit for being the first to deliver on the consumer demand for a powerful, slim flagship phone.
