OnePlus Embraces AI: Revamps Alert Slider into a Customizable ‘Plus Key’
OnePlus has finally unveiled its ambitious AI strategy, dubbed OnePlus AI, which promises to infuse its future smartphones with intelligent capabilities.
Joining the AI Race
This move positions OnePlus alongside tech giants like Samsung (with Galaxy AI) and Motorola (Moto ai) who have already established their own AI-driven ecosystems.
The OnePlus AI experience will make its debut on the upcoming OnePlus 13s smartphone, launching on June 5th. A dedicated hardware button, aptly named the ‘Plus Key,’ will act as the gateway to OnePlus AI, similar to Nothing’s approach with the Phone 3a series. OnePlus plans to integrate this Plus Key across all its smartphones released this year.
Alert Slider Gets a Smart Upgrade
Interestingly, OnePlus didn’t introduce a new button for this AI functionality. Instead, the iconic Alert slider, a signature feature of OnePlus phones, has been reimagined as the Plus Key.
According to OnePlus, the Plus Key can be customized to perform various actions, such as switching sound profiles, launching the camera, initiating translations, or starting recordings.
Introducing AI Plus Mind
The Plus Key also unlocks AI Plus Mind, a new feature designed to streamline the way users interact with information on their screens. AI Plus Mind allows users to quickly save, organize, and recall important details found on the screen.
Whether it’s a schedule, event details, reservation, or a listing, users can save it by pressing the Plus Key or using a three-finger swipe.
AI Plus Mind then stores this relevant content in a dedicated ‘Mind Space,’ making it readily accessible.
OnePlus emphasizes that AI Plus Mind utilizes AI to analyze content contextually. For example, it can extract schedule information from an image or text and directly add it to the user’s calendar.
Further enhancing the experience, AI Search, integrated with AI Plus Mind, supports natural language queries, allowing users to easily retrieve saved content.
OnePlus plans to add automatic content categorization to AI Plus Mind later this year, further improving organization.
Wider Availability and Future Integration
AI Plus Mind will initially launch with the OnePlus 13s and will be rolled out to the rest of the OnePlus 13 series through a software update. OnePlus aims to make this feature available on a wider range of devices in the future.
Furthermore, OnePlus’s AI assistant, Gemini, will soon integrate with various OxygenOS apps like OnePlus Notes and Clock, as well as Google’s apps. Gemini Live, with its camera and screen sharing capabilities, will enable real-time conversations about captured images and on-screen content.
Prioritizing Data Privacy
OnePlus underscores its commitment to user privacy by prioritizing on-device processing within a secure environment. When more complex computations are required, the company’s Private Computing Cloud provides a protected space for data processing, ensuring user data remains private and inaccessible to unauthorized parties. This is achieved through a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) that spans the device, cloud servers, and the data transfer process.
