Mozilla Says Goodbye to Pocket: All About Firefox’s Big Focus

In a surprising move, Mozilla has decided to close down its popular read-it-later service, Pocket. This means the end of an era for the platform, which has been around for over a decade. But don’t worry, Pocket isn’t disappearing overnight. It will officially shut down on July 8, 2025.
What Does This Mean for Pocket Users?
Starting this fall, Pocket will be removed from app stores, and new subscriptions won’t be sold. Annual subscribers will get their money back starting in July. If you’ve used Pocket to save articles, you have until October 8 to download everything. After that, all your data will be gone for good. The Pocket API will also be shut down on July 8, 2025.
Firefox Gets the Spotlight
This isn’t the only change Mozilla is making. They’re also closing down Fakespot, a service they bought in 2023, which helps spot fake reviews. The Fakespot Firefox extension will stop working on June 10, and all other platforms will shut down by July 1.
Mozilla wants to make Firefox even better by adding features like Tab Groups and improved bookmarks. These built-in tools will replace the need for third-party services like Pocket.
The Future is AI-Powered
According to Mozilla, how people use the web has changed a lot. They want to make Firefox more helpful by adding tools for discovering and reading content directly into the browser. Some of Pocket’s best features, like curated article recommendations, will live on in Firefox. Mozilla also hinted at using AI to make Firefox even smarter in the future.
A New Chapter
Closing Pocket might seem like an end, but it’s really a chance for Mozilla to focus on what matters most: making Firefox the best browser possible. They’re investing in new features and AI to make browsing easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
