Green Manure Seed Shortage Delays Farm Preparations in Telangana

Telangana farmers are facing a delay in their preparations for the Kharif season due to a shortage of green manure seed, according to Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao. The minister said the government had planned ahead to supply the necessary seed, but the National Seed Corporation has only delivered 1,000 quintals out of the 40,000 quintals they were supposed to provide.

The Telangana Seeds Corporation, on the other hand, has fulfilled its part of the deal, supplying 71,535 quintals of green manure seed to the 20 districts they were allocated. This has allowed the government to begin selling the seed in those districts. However, the delay from the National Seed Corporation has hampered efforts to start selling the green manure in the remaining 12 districts.

The minister explained that the government had decided to start selling green manure seed in all 32 districts due to early rainfall across Telangana. They wanted farmers to have enough time to sow the green manure before planting their regular crops. The Telangana authorities have been in contact with the National Seed Corporation, urging them to deliver the remaining seed promptly.

In an effort to mitigate the situation, the Telangana government has also been working with the Telangana Seeds Corporation to secure additional green manure seed supplies.

Context:

Green manure is a type of fertilizer made from plants that are plowed back into the soil. It helps improve soil fertility and health.
