Get ready to meet GTA VI, the eighth installment in the iconic Grand Theft Auto series, set to hit the shelves in May 2026. Development on this behemoth started way back in 2014, and it’s been a wild ride. Rockstar Games, the studio behind GTA VI, has reportedly spent a staggering $1-2 billion to bring this game to life.
That’s right, $1-2 billion! To put that in perspective, even the conservative estimate surpasses the combined production budgets of Avatar, Avengers, and Star Wars.
What Made GTA VI So Expensive?
The development of GTA VI was shrouded in secrecy from the get-go. Rockstar first started working on the game after releasing GTA V in 2014.
It took three years just to lay the groundwork, and production only kicked off in 2018 after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. The COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench in the works, forcing Rockstar to allow employees to work remotely, which slowed progress even further.
The Leaks That Derailed Development
GTA VI’s development wasn’t smooth sailing. A major leak in 2022 by a hacker known as “teapotuberhacker” sent shockwaves through the gaming world.
The hacker released 90 videos of early game footage to the GTAForums, showing 50 minutes of work-in-progress gameplay. Rockstar took swift legal action against the hacker, leading to their arrest.
In 2025, another leak surfaced, showing gameplay footage on PlayStation 5. Rockstar eventually released a trailer in May 2025 and confirmed the release date of May 26, 2026.

The constant delays and Rockstar’s tight-lipped approach fueled fan frustration, leading to the birth of the “before GTA 6” meme.
Social media users would jokingly post absurd scenarios, noting that even the most outrageous event happened before GTA VI’s release. Ironically, this meme only amplified the anticipation surrounding the game.

Set in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, GTA VI is an open-world game that promises the same gritty action and social commentary that made the series famous.
This time around, players will control two protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Lucia marks the series’ first non-optional female protagonist.
