Google Search Gets a Smart Makeover: AI Mode Rolls Out in the US

Google I/O 2025: All About AI
Google’s annual developer event, I/O 2025, was all buzz about artificial intelligence. From new tools to product integrations, Google’s vision is to power all its offerings with Gemini AI. And what about Google Search, their flagship product?
AI is already woven into Search with features like AI Overviews, those handy summaries that appear at the top of search results. But Google’s ambitions for AI in Search go way beyond that.
AI Mode: The Next Step in Search
Google announced that its experimental AI Mode, which has been in testing for months, is now rolling out to all users in the United States.
Previously available only through Google Labs, a program with a waitlist, AI Mode is now seamlessly integrated into the Search app. No need to log in; it’s readily accessible to everyone in the US.
For now, AI Mode is primarily available on mobile devices in the US. Users in India will have to wait a bit longer and try their luck with Google Labs.
Think of AI Mode as an evolution of AI Overviews. While Overviews provide quick summaries based on web results, AI Mode takes it further. It empowers users to ask more complex and detailed questions, receiving smarter, more comprehensive answers directly within Search.
With AI Mode, Google aims to make searching more natural. You can ask long, intricate questions, even those based on images. Instead of simply listing links, AI Mode analyzes your query, combs through various websites, and delivers a more in-depth answer. It also suggests follow-up questions and links, allowing you to delve deeper into the topic if you wish.
Imagine ChatGPT’s search mode responses integrated into Google Search—that’s the essence of AI Mode.
Here are some practical examples:
- Planning a weekend getaway? Ask AI Mode for things to do, places to dine, and current events. The AI will even consider your past restaurant bookings or email confirmations (with your permission) to tailor the results to your specific interests.
- Stuck on a science project? Use the new Search Live feature to point your phone’s camera at the object or concept and ask questions in real time. Google’s AI will analyze what you’re seeing and provide helpful explanations and resources.
- Need to buy tickets or book an appointment? Simply type your request, like “Find two cheap tickets for a movie,” and AI Mode will scour the web, compare options, and present you with relevant details.
More Exciting Features
Google is also introducing other exciting features to AI Mode, such as:
- Deep Search: This feature allows for in-depth research by issuing hundreds of queries behind the scenes, analyzing the results, and generating a comprehensive report with references.
- AI Agents: These agents can help you with tasks like shopping, booking, and scheduling by understanding your natural language requests.
The future looks bright for AI Mode. Google is testing a dedicated tab for AI Mode directly within the main Search interface for some US users, suggesting a global rollout is on the horizon.
Furthermore, Google is making it easier to revisit past searches. A new sidebar on desktop will allow users to pick up where they left off, which is particularly helpful for complex tasks like trip planning or large purchases.
AI Mode: A Powerful New Tool
AI Mode represents a significant leap forward for Google Search, offering a more intuitive, insightful, and personalized search experience.
