Google Beam: Your 2D Video Calls Will Never Be the Same

Google is shaking up the way we communicate online with its brand new platform, Beam! Unveiled at Google I/O 2025, Beam takes your standard 2D video calls and transforms them into immersive 3D experiences.

How Does Beam Work?

Beam uses a clever combination of multiple webcams and AI to capture you from various angles. This 3D data is then woven together to create a realistic light field display, making it feel like you’re actually in the same room as the person you’re talking to. Google even boasts about the platform’s incredibly accurate head tracking, down to the millimeter and at a smooth 60 frames per second. Imagine making eye contact and reading subtle facial expressions, just like you would in a real-life conversation!

From Project Starline to Beam

Beam is actually the evolution of Google’s earlier project, Starline, which aimed to bring 3D video communication to life. While Starline didn’t quite take off as planned, its core technology has been repurposed and refined into the powerful Beam platform.

The Future is 3D

Google is already working on adding exciting features to Beam, like real-time speech translation, which will be available in both Beam and Google Meet. And the best part? HP will be the first to bring Beam devices to market later this year, with more products from other manufacturers following suit. Get ready to experience video communication like never before!

Beyond Beam

Along with the exciting news about Beam, Google also announced upgrades to its Gemini 2.5 AI models and expanded its AI Overviews to over 200 countries in more than 40 languages.
