Vengsarkar Stunned by Rohit and Kohli’s Early Test Retirement

Vengsarkar Expresses Surprise at Rohit and Kohli’s Test Departures
Former Indian batting great Dilip Vengsarkar has admitted to being surprised by the recent decision of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to retire from Test cricket. Both players, who announced their decision earlier this month while choosing to continue in One Day Internationals, leave a massive gap in the Indian Test squad just as a new World Test Championship cycle begins.
A Surprise Move
Vengsarkar, speaking to the media, stated that he had anticipated the pair to call it quits after the upcoming five-Test series against England, which kicks off on June 20th. He said, ‘I thought after the England tour, they might call it a day, but they preferred it before the England tour. Then I think it’s their call.’
A Legacy of Excellence
Both Sharma and Kohli have been pillars of Indian cricket for over a decade. Kohli ends his Test career with an impressive 9,230 runs in 123 matches, boasting 30 centuries and 31 fifties. Sharma, meanwhile, amassed 4,301 runs in 67 matches, with 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. Their consistent performances have made them legends of the game.
Filling the Void
Vengsarkar acknowledges the significant void their departures create, particularly given their experience and success in England. He believes that the upcoming series against England will present a great opportunity for younger players to step up and make their mark on the Indian team. He said, ‘Then, if you see that other players have done well for the India A team, in first-class cricket in India, they will get an opportunity to play and establish themselves in the Indian team.’
Selectors to Decide Replacements
When asked about potential replacements for Sharma and Kohli, Vengsarkar deferred to the selectors. He stated, ‘It is difficult to say who will replace them because it is up to (Ajit Agarkar) and Co. as they are selectors. They are observing FC matches (Irani Cup, Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy), and I think it’s all up to them (selectors).’
Shreyas Iyer: A Bright Spot
Vengsarkar also praised Shreyas Iyer for his impressive form in recent times, highlighting his success in the Champions Trophy 2025 and IPL 2025. Iyer’s consistent performances have led to speculation that he could be a contender to fill the void left by Kohli in the Test squad.
