Sunil Gavaskar’s Message to Sarfaraz Khan: Learn from Karun Nair’s Journey

Shubman Gill Named Test Captain, New Era Dawns for Indian Cricket
Indian cricket is experiencing a generational shift. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping down from Test captaincy, the BCCI has entrusted the mantle to Shubman Gill for the upcoming five-match series against England.
Rishabh Pant joins Gill as the vice-captain. Notably absent from the squad are established players like Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Shami, and Sarfaraz Khan, sparking discussion about the selection process.
Gavaskar’s Words of Encouragement for Sarfaraz
Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar, speaking to India Today, offered guidance to Sarfaraz Khan, urging him to draw inspiration from the comeback stories of cricketers like Jaydev Unadkat and Karun Nair.
Gavaskar highlighted Karun Nair’s case, explaining how he consistently performed well in domestic cricket even after long gaps between appearances for the national team. Nair eventually earned a recall to the squad, proving that consistency earns recognition.
‘A man in form is one of your best bets,’ Gavaskar emphasized. ‘He is scoring runs, he also got the experience of County Championships. It’s a very good call to bring him back to Indian cricket.’
The Importance of Consistency and Taking Opportunities
Gavaskar stressed the importance of cementing one’s place in the team. He reminded Sarfaraz that maintaining consistency is crucial: ‘It’s tough, that’s what cricket is all about. When you get opportunities, you have to make sure the place is yours. Even if you score a hundred, you should make sure that you don’t go into your next innings thinking you scored a hundred in the previous knock. You have to get your eye in and get those runs again. You must not give anybody a chance to push you out of the team.’
He urged Sarfaraz to seize every opportunity and strive to become undroppable: ‘You have to be undropabble. We have seen in the past, if a team loses a series, the guys who are 13th, 14th, 15th in the squad get dropped. You have to take your chances.’
Sarfaraz Khan’s Potential and the Selection Process
Sarfaraz made a promising debut, scoring twin half-centuries and a magnificent 150 in Bengaluru. However, his recent absence from the squad has raised eyebrows. The chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, defended the decision, attributing it to a team management call, hinting at the influence of Gautam Gambhir and his support staff.
