Shubman Gill to Captain India in Tests: Overcoming Resistance and Securing the Role

Shubman Gill: India’s Next Test Captain?
Shubman Gill appears poised to take the helm as India’s next Test captain, a decision that has reportedly faced some pushback from influential figures within Indian cricket.
The news comes after Jasprit Bumrah, widely considered the frontrunner, suffered a back injury in January that sidelined him for several months. This setback, coupled with concerns about Bumrah’s workload, prompted the selectors to explore alternatives.
Gill’s Rise to the Top
Gill’s candidature gained momentum due to his impressive performances in recent times. He has proven himself as a capable leader in the IPL, captaining the Gujarat Titans, and has also served as deputy in India’s white-ball formats.
However, his selection wasn’t without controversy. According to a PTI report, Gill’s sudden elevation irked some influential individuals in Indian cricket. Despite this, the report indicates that these individuals were informed about the decision before it was finalized.
Confirmation from Gambhir
A recent “extended meeting” between Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir in Delhi seemingly solidified Gill’s position as the next Test captain. This meeting followed speculation fueled by Gambhir’s presence in Mumbai for a religious ceremony. The report states that Gambhir’s involvement confirms the selectors’ decision and minimizes the chances of a change of heart.
The Indian team is expected to be announced by the end of the month, with players departing for London after the IPL final on June 3. The highly anticipated five-match Test series against England is scheduled to begin on June 20.
