Rohit Sharma Retires: BCCI Says No to Mid-Series Exit

Rohit Sharma’s Test Career Ends Abruptly
Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma has retired from Test cricket, effective immediately. This sudden departure comes after reports that the BCCI rejected his proposal to captain the upcoming Test series against England and retire mid-way through, similar to what MS Dhoni did in 2014.
The Captainship Decision
The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is currently debating Rohit’s replacement. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are considered frontrunners for the Test captaincy.
However, there seems to be a split within the selectors. One source told Sky Sports News that a selector is hesitant to give Gill the captaincy because his spot on the team isn’t guaranteed and believes he’d be better suited as vice-captain.
Rohit’s Unfulfilled Wish
According to reports, Rohit wanted to travel to England for the Test series but retire during the middle. This plan, reminiscent of Dhoni’s 2014 Australian tour, was reportedly turned down by the BCCI.
The BCCI reportedly offered Rohit the chance to participate in the series but not as captain. He ultimately chose to retire instead.
A New Era for Indian Cricket
This news comes on the heels of Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket just days ago. With both Rohit and Kohli retiring from the longest format, Indian cricket enters a new era. Both players will now solely focus on playing ODI cricket.
