Neeraj Chopra Makes History: First Indian to Throw Over 90 Meters!

India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra made history at the Doha Diamond League 2025, becoming the first Indian athlete ever to throw over 90 meters in international competition!
Chopra’s incredible throw of 90.23 meters shattered his previous personal and national records, solidifying his place in Indian athletics history. While he finished second to Germany’s Julian Weber, who threw an impressive 91.06 meters, Chopra’s accomplishment was met with immense pride and celebration in India.
Prime Minister Modi’s Recognition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the millions of Indians who congratulated Chopra on this historic feat. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90 m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion. India is elated and proud.”
Chopra’s Response and Reflection
Chopra expressed his gratitude for the Prime Minister’s kind words and encouragement, stating, “Thank you shri @narendramodi ji for your kind words and encouragement. I hope to continue and give my best for the country always!”
Reflecting on the moment, Chopra admitted it was “bittersweet.” While thrilled to have finally broken the 90m barrier, finishing second echoed a familiar pattern for him, similar to his experiences at the Stockholm and Turku competitions.
Overcoming Challenges
Chopra acknowledged that persistent groin issues had hampered his performance in recent seasons. However, he now feels physically stronger and more confident. “This year, I feel much better… I believe I can throw more than 90m in the upcoming events,” he said.
