Neeraj Chopra Addresses Backlash Over Invitation to Pakistani Athlete

Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has spoken out about the controversy surrounding his invitation to Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem to compete in his upcoming ‘Neeraj Chopra Classic’ in Bengaluru.

Chopra clarified that his invitation was purely an athlete-to-athlete gesture, aimed at promoting sportsmanship and bringing top athletes to India. He emphasized that the invitation was extended two days before the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people and injured many others.

Since the attack, Chopra has faced a wave of hate and abuse online, with some criticizing his decision to include a Pakistani athlete in his event. He acknowledged this backlash in his statement, saying it had even extended to his family.

In light of the recent events, Chopra stated that Arshad Nadeem’s participation in the ‘Neeraj Chopra Classic’ is no longer possible.

A Difficult Decision

Chopra’s decision reflects the sensitive political climate between India and Pakistan. While he initially aimed to foster unity through sport, the tragic events in Pahalgam have made it clear that Nadeem’s presence would be deeply divisive.
