Man United Could Spend Big, But First, They Need to Sell
Manchester United is looking at a major summer overhaul, but first, they need to shed some players to make room for new signings. The club is reportedly planning to spend around £400 million, but that depends on selling two key players: Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.
This comes after a disappointing season for United, which saw them miss out on Champions League qualification. Their loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final was the last straw, leaving them with a hefty financial penalty from their kit sponsor, Adidas.
Missing out on Champions League Millions
Adidas’ contract with United includes a ‘Champions League clause’, meaning the club’s annual earnings from the deal could drop by £10 million for every season they fail to make the competition. This is a big blow for United, as they were expected to earn at least £85 million just for qualifying.
The club’s financial troubles are forcing them to consider selling players to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Selling Garnacho and Rashford, who are both valued at around £95 million combined, would bring in a significant profit, allowing United to spend more on new players.
Who Could Be Arriving?
United is reportedly interested in signing Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap and Wolves’ Matheus Cunha. The duo are valued at around £92 million combined, which means a lot of money needs to be moved around. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire confirmed that the scenario is possible, but it hinges on the wages of the incoming and outgoing players.
The Challenge of Attracting Top Talent
While United’s financial muscle is impressive, their lack of Champions League football could be a major obstacle in attracting top talent. Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting CP, recently said that while Manchester United is a desirable club for many players, its current struggles could make it a less appealing destination.
