IPL 2025 Returns Amidst Tensions: Sunil Gavaskar Calls for Cricket-Only Focus

IPL 2025 Resumes Amidst Border Tensions
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to resume on May 17th after a week-long suspension due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initially postponed the matches following the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22nd, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
In a statement, the BCCI expressed solidarity with the Indian government and armed forces, praising their efforts in Operation Sindoor to protect the nation from recent aggression.
Respectful Celebration Amidst Grief
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has called for a more subdued atmosphere during the remaining matches, urging the organizers to refrain from entertainment elements beyond the cricket itself.
Gavaskar suggested that the focus should remain solely on the game, minimizing distractions like music, DJs, and dancing performers. He believes that this approach would be a respectful gesture towards the families who have lost loved ones in the recent tragedy.
“What I would really like to see is, these are the last few matches. I think we have had about 60 games or thereabouts. I think it is the last 15 or 16 games. I would sincerely… because of what has happened and some families have lost their near and dear ones, I would like all the show-sha baji that goes with it to not be there. Just the game to be played. Let there be crowd but no music. Let’s not have the DJs screaming in the middle of an over. None of that,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
“Let’s just have a tournament, the balance of a tournament. No dancing girls, nothing. Just cricket would be a really nice way to respect the sentiment of the families who have lost their near and dear ones,” he added.
Foreign Players’ Return Uncertain
The BCCI has not yet confirmed the participation of foreign players in the remaining matches. The league’s suspension led to many players returning to their home countries. The BCCI has left the decision regarding their return to the individual franchises.
“We are not in a position to comment at the moment. The franchises are better placed to provide details about who is coming and who isn’t,” a BCCI official told IANS.
The IPL 2025 will resume at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 17th, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Kolkata Knight Riders. The final is scheduled for June 3rd.
