IPL 2025: Home Ground Blues for Some Teams as Tournament Resumes in 6 Cities

IPL 2025: A Limited Home Turf
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for its second phase, kicking off on May 17th in Bengaluru with a clash between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). While the excitement is building, there’s a twist this time around—the tournament will be hosted across just six cities instead of the usual flurry of venues.
A Change of Plans
Earlier reports suggested a more drastic measure, with the IPL potentially being confined to just 3-4 cities to minimize travel and logistical complexities. However, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has opted for a slightly more expansive approach, choosing Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chennai as the host cities.
Home Ground Blues
This decision, while aiming to ensure smooth operations, has come with a catch: some teams will be missing out on playing their home games in their usual locations.
The most surprising exclusions are Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata. The Punjab Kings, for instance, will play their remaining home matches in Jaipur, while the Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad will have to make do with Delhi as their temporary home ground.
Playoffs on the Move
Adding another layer to the logistical puzzle, the playoffs are also likely to be shifted out of Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. The BCCI is reportedly concerned about the weather conditions in these cities during the playoff stage and is considering Ahmedabad and Mumbai as potential alternatives.
A Look at the Schedule
Here’s a quick look at the adjusted home matches for some teams:
Punjab Kings
- May 18 – vs Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur
- May 24 – vs Delhi Capitals in Jaipur
- May 26 – vs Mumbai Indians in Jaipur
Chennai Super Kings
- May 20 – vs Rajasthan Royals in Delhi
- May 25 – vs Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad
(Remaining matches to be confirmed)
