Gambhir Responds to Criticism From Former Players

India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has fiercely defended his coaching record against criticism from a couple of unnamed former Test players, accusing them of treating Indian cricket like their personal fiefdom.

‘Not My Personal Property’

Speaking at ABP News’ ‘India At 2047’ Summit, Gambhir stated, “Unfortunately, Indian cricket’s no one’s personal property and it belongs to 140 crore Indians.” He emphasized that while he welcomes criticism, especially when results aren’t favorable, he won’t tolerate those who seem to believe they have ownership over the sport.

Tax Controversy and Champions Trophy Prize Money

Gambhir specifically addressed comments regarding his handling of Champions Trophy prize money and a past concussion he sustained during the 2011 tour of England. He clarified his stance on his financial decisions, stating, ‘These people have raised questions about my coaching, my records, concussions (when he left 2011 Tour of England after a head injury), to distribution of Champions Trophy prize money. I don’t need to tell anybody where I have spent money and where I have invested. But this country must know such players are NRIs who earn in India and take the money outside. I don’t immigrate at 11:55 to spend 180 days…I am an Indian. I will never become NRI to save tax,’

Addressing Speculation About Rohit Sharma

Gambhir also dismissed speculation about a rift with Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma, asserting that he has a great deal of respect for the player and their recent Champions Trophy win together.

Gambhir’s Direct Approach

Known for his straightforward style, Gambhir ended his response with a pointed quip, “Those living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones at others.” His comments clearly indicate he’s not afraid to stand up for himself and his coaching decisions.
