From India U19 World Cup Winner to USA Cricket Star: Smit Patel Blazes ODI Century
Smit Patel, a 32-year-old cricketer who was part of India’s triumphant U19 World Cup squad in 2012, has made history by smashing a maiden ODI hundred for the USA. This incredible feat came during their dominant 169-run victory over Canada in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 2023-27.
A Century Partnership Fuels USA’s Win
Patel, alongside fellow Indian-born batsman Milind Kumar, formed a formidable partnership that powered the USA to a formidable total of 361-3. Patel smashed 152 runs off 137 balls, while Kumar scored a rapid 115 runs from just 67 balls. Their combined effort of 208 runs for the fourth wicket effectively chased Canada out of the game, leaving them reeling at 192 all out.
Patel’s Rise to Stardom
Patel’s sporting journey is a testament to his talent and determination. He was instrumental in India’s U19 World Cup victory in 2012, with a brilliant 62* in the final against Australia. He continued to excel in Indian domestic cricket, representing teams like Baroda, Goa, Gujarat, and Tripura, accumulating 3278 runs, including 11 centuries. However, despite his impressive performances, a spot in the senior Indian team remained elusive.
A New Chapter with the USA
In 2021, Patel made a strategic decision to retire from cricket under the auspices of the BCCI, allowing him to represent the USA. This move has proven to be a fruitful one, with Patel now becoming a vital asset for the USA cricket team, showcasing his batting prowess on the international stage.
A Growing Trend
The USA cricket team boasts a number of players who started their careers in India, highlighting a growing trend of talent seeking new horizons. Milind Kumar, Harmeet Singh, Saurabh Netravalkar, and USA skipper Monank Patel all have experience playing domestic cricket in India before joining the USA squad.
