Flick Frustrated With Officiating After Inter Milan Loss

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, despite acknowledging his team’s valiant efforts, expressed his disappointment over the refereeing in their 4-3 defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final. The loss marked the end of Barcelona’s European campaign, but Flick felt the outcome was unfairly influenced by some key officiating calls.

A Thrilling Match Ends in Extra Time Drama

The match was a rollercoaster, mirroring the first leg’s 3-3 draw. Both teams poured their hearts out, with the score tied 3-3 after 90 minutes, forcing extra time. It was Davide Frattesi’s decisive goal in extra time that secured Inter Milan’s victory.

Praise for Players, Criticism for Referee

Despite the bitter defeat, Flick was quick to praise his players. He stated, “I’m disappointed with the result, not with the team’s performance. It is what it is, we are out, but we will try again because we want to make the fans happy. Winning the Champions League was our goal and it will be again.”

However, his praise was tempered by a stinging critique of referee Szymon Marciniak. Flick felt several crucial 50-50 calls went against Barcelona, stating, “We think the result is unfair because of some refereeing decisions…every decision that was 50-50 ended up being in their favour, that’s what makes me sad.”

Looking Ahead to El Clasico

Flick, while frustrated with the refereeing, acknowledged the quality of Inter Milan’s performance, stating, “It’s also happened that Inter also played, they have good strikers, they defend well, with good automatisms.”

Now, Barcelona’s focus shifts to the upcoming El Clasico against Real Madrid, a match with huge La Liga title implications. Flick emphasized, “We play to win titles and on Sunday we have a very difficult game, we have three days to prepare for it.”

Pride in the Team’s Effort

Concluding his post-match thoughts, Flick expressed pride in his players, saying, “Every player, when they get home at four in the morning, can be proud to look at themselves in the mirror.”
