A Heated Exchange Over Pahalgam Attacks

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has once again found himself at odds with another ex-teammate, Shahid Afridi, following the horrific Pahalgam attacks in India in April 2025. Kaneria, known for his outspokenness, took to social media to criticize Afridi’s comments on the tragedy, accusing him of harboring a ‘communal mindset’.

The attacks, claimed by the Resistance Front, a proxy of the ISI-backed LeT, left 26 unarmed civilians dead, mostly tourists. In the aftermath, Afridi made statements suggesting that India’s army was not intervening in the attacks and later blamed Pakistan. Kaneria, however, condemned the attacks and pointed out Afridi’s history of making provocative statements about Kashmir.

Religion and Rivalry

Adding fuel to the fire, Kaneria resurrected past grievances, stating that Afridi had previously tried to pressure him to convert to Islam and even refused to share a meal with him due to his religion. Kaneria believes that Afridi’s extremist views should prevent him from having a platform in India.

Beyond the Cricket Field

Kaneria’s criticism didn’t stop there. He also faced scrutiny from a Pakistani journalist who questioned his consistent criticism of Pakistan. Kaneria stood firm, reiterating his stance and delivering a sharp retort to the journalist.

This incident highlights the complex and often tense relationship between India and Pakistan, particularly in the context of cricket. It also sheds light on the deep-seated religious and political divides that continue to plague the region.
