Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s Journey on Screen: A Massive Hit

Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the historical drama Chhaava has been widely praised, and the film itself has been a resounding success, grossing almost Rs 800 crores globally. While the entire film industry is experiencing a lull, Chhaava has emerged as a beacon of hope, sparking celebrations within the industry.

Director Mahesh Manjrekar has attributed a significant portion of the film’s success to the Maharashtra audience. In a recent interview with Mirchi Marathi, Manjrekar emphasized that the film’s resonated with people because they connected with the character of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, not just with Vicky Kaushal’s performance.

Why Maharashtra?

Manjrekar pointed out that although Kaushal has delivered commendable performances in previous films, they didn’t achieve the same level of success. He believes the audience in Maharashtra, particularly in Pune, rallied behind Chhaava, demonstrating their affection for the character and its historical significance.

Manjrekar stated, “Vicky Kaushal is a very fine actor. His film Chhaava collected Rs.800 crores. But Vicky Kaushal can never say that people came to see him. Because then they would have come to see the previous five films as well. The audience came to see your character. His previous five films did not work.”

He went on to say, “So, my Maharashtra has saved the Hindi film industry, remember this. Today, Chhaava is doing well, and 80 percent of its credit goes to Maharashtra. In fact, 90 percent of the credit goes to Pune, and the rest goes to other parts of Maharashtra. Maharashtra can save the industry.”

A Stellar Cast and Crew

Chhaava is directed by Laxman Utekar and also features a talented ensemble cast, including Rashmika Mandanna as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife, Yesubai Bhonsale. Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta also play pivotal roles in the film. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, the movie has garnered significant attention for its stellar performances and impactful storytelling.

The film minted more than Rs 600 crores in India. Vicky Kaushal will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, where he will star alongside Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor.
