Thane Building Collapse: 17 Families Evacuated

Heavy rains in Maharashtra triggered a building collapse in Thane city early Tuesday morning, forcing the evacuation of 17 families. The incident occurred around 2:25 am at the Nandadeep building in the Wagle Estate area.

Dangerous Building Identified

According to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Thane disaster management cell, the building, over 50 years old, had already been classified as dangerous (C2B category) by the Thane Municipal Corporation following a survey this year. A portion of the third-floor roof and the stair gallery collapsed, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Precautionary Evacuation

As a precaution, all residents of the Nandadeep building were evacuated, and those living in the two adjacent buildings have also been temporarily asked to find alternative accommodation.

Widespread Building Concerns in Thane

This incident highlights a broader issue in Thane, where a staggering 4,407 buildings have been classified as dangerous, with the Mumbra area having the highest number (1,343) of such structures.

Rain-Related Fatalities in Pune

Tragically, the heavy rains in Maharashtra have also claimed lives in Pune district. Over the past two days, at least three individuals have died in separate rain-related incidents:

  • Santosh Khandve, a resident of Raundalwadi in Khed tehsil, was struck by lightning while fishing on Monday afternoon.
  • Tarabai Ahir, a 75-year-old woman from Daund tehsil, suffered fatal injuries when a wall of her house collapsed.
  • A young man died in Vikhroli area of Mumbai when a tree fell on him amidst heavy rains.

The rains have also caused waterlogging and inundation in several villages, adding to the challenges faced by residents.
