Amaravati’s Comeback: A Grand Re-launch

Get ready for a spectacle! Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate Amaravati 2.0 on May 2nd. This event marks a significant step in the development of Andhra Pradesh’s capital city.

Unlike previous times, the current government seems determined to make a strong statement. Chandrababu Naidu’s team has already awarded tenders worth a whopping Rs 41,000 crore for various projects, and work is already underway.

Just recently, they even called for tenders to build a massive new state secretariat with five towers, costing an estimated Rs 4,700 crore! Naidu wants to showcase incredible progress in the next three years, making it nearly impossible for any future government to change the capital city.

The Big Question: Will Jagan Attend?

Interestingly, the government plans to invite YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the current Chief Minister, to this grand inauguration. Jagan was invited to the original Amaravati inauguration in 2015, but he chose not to go.

Things got complicated between 2019 and 2024 when Jagan’s government tried to establish three capitals, causing quite a stir in Amaravati. However, in the 2024 elections, the people of Visakhapatnam, a major city in the state, showed their wisdom by rejecting this idea.

With Amaravati projected to be transformed significantly by 2029, it seems unlikely that anyone could successfully try to change the capital again. Neither the courts nor the people would stand for it.

Many believe it would be best for Jagan to attend the ceremony and show support for the city’s progress. Skipping it could be seen as antagonizing the people of Amaravati, especially after the recent election results.

However, Jagan has a reputation for being quite stubborn. He even skipped the Assembly session because he didn’t want to attend as the Opposition leader. Will he overcome his ego and join the inauguration?

It will be fascinating to see what reason Jagan comes up with this time if he decides to skip the event. Will he make an appearance, or will he offer another explanation?
